Camp der Renegaten
The World Is Not Fair – The Great World's Fair 2012, grounds of the former airport in Tempelhof Berlin
Approximately 10 000 artists are currently living in Berlin and an end of the influx from all over the world is not in sight. Suppose that they will stay in the city and grow old here, what to do with the aged artists in 30, 40 years?
10 000 artists make a whole district. Most of them live precariously and do not profit from the glamor they provide to the image of Berlin Time is high to reflect upon an artist colony and take matters into our own hands. The "Camp of the Renegades" puts the issue of aging artists on the agenda and introduces the settlement project to the public.
What does it imply for artists to retire? What about their economic situation, their network, access to spaces, exhibitions, commissions and funding? We talked to 30 artists over 65 years old about their situation and the idea of an artist settlement. From this material we developed a script for two actresses in the "Camp of the Renegades".
The idea of autarky was represented by three sheep in a corral.
